Community invited Nov. 5 to join in action to save veteran lives, CEU training available for case managers and social workers
LANSING, Mich. — The Lansing Area Veterans Coalition (LAVC), under the direction of Jon Garvey of the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA), will host a community-wide Suicide Awareness & Prevention Event on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at the Anderson House Office Building (Mackinac Room) in downtown Lansing. This event will bring together veterans, families, professionals, and community members to learn, connect, and strengthen local efforts to prevent suicide among those who have served.
Veteran suicide remains of the most urgent public health crises in the nation. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ 2022 Annual Suicide Prevention Report, nearly 17 veterans die by suicide every day in the United States. In Michigan, the veteran suicide rate is consistently higher than the national average, underscoring the importance of community-based prevention efforts.
“As a community, we have a shared responsibility to ensure every veteran knows they are seen, valued, and supported,” said Inetta Smith, chair of the Lansing Area Veterans Coalition. “This event brings our partners together to strengthen our safety net – so when a veteran reached out, someone trained and ready is there to answer.”
The event will include continuing education training for Case Managers and Social Workers, equipping professionals and community members with practical tools to prevent veteran suicide and support military families.
