On Wednesday, June 21 at 11 a.m., Grand Haven High School’s new Buccaneer Wall of Honor will take center stage in a public unveiling.
It’s been an ongoing effort since last year’s seniors in the “Pay It Forward” course decided that their project would honor veterans who graduated from GHHS.
There are a lot of layers to the Pay if Forward course. Students start by visiting different nonprofits around our community and speaking with people who’ve had to overcome difficult circumstances. They get their blindfolds taken off and gain a clearer perspective of the community. They start to understand that people need help and that they can be that help, now and in the future.”
Brian Williams, GHHS teacher
During the process, says Williams, something will speak to the students. Then they work in small groups to plan and execute projects that make a positive, tangible and immediate impact, like fundraisers, awareness events and more. The students learn communication, organization and networking skills as they work to bring their projects to life.
Last year, six “Pay It Forward” seniors were inspired to create a tribute to local veterans. They interviewed veterans from the American Legion, refined the artistic vision for the project, and worked with a variety of suppliers to price out materials.
Underneath four American flags, the Buccaneer Wall of Honor features seals and flags from each branch of the United States military. Plaques list the Grand Haven graduates who have served, along with their graduation years and years of service.
“The ultimate goal of this class is to build empathy in students and plant a seed in them,” shares Williams. “No task is too big for someone who sees a need and wants to meet it. I want them to understand that no matter their job or career, they can all make contributions to their community.”
