On May 2, voters in Grand Haven Area Public Schools rejected the district’s $155 million bond proposal. In response, the Board of Education and district administration acknowledged the need for a deeper understanding of the community’s feelings and priorities.
Our post-election research wasn’t just designed to find out why the previous bond failed or what residents would support in future bond proposals. It was a way for us to open up the lines of communication and give voters a chance to tell us what’s truly important to them.”
GHAPS Superintendent Scott Grimes
Research methods included an online survey and a set of focus groups, conducted earlier this month. Key findings include the need for the district to rebuild trust throughout the community and the importance of transparency and clarity, especially related to fiscal responsibility. Research participants also made it clear that they want the district to reduce the dollar amount of a future bond, prioritize needs, and provide more details about plans related to Lakeshore Middle School. The full research report is available here.
“We are listening,” says Grimes. “Based on this research, we’re working with our architects, engineers and advisors to explore approaches that address the community’s concerns and priorities.”
Community members can expect an update from the Board of Education at their July 17 meeting. If a new bond proposal is planned for the November 2023 election, board members will vote on its approval at their August 14 meeting. All Board of Education meetings are held at 7 p.m. and are open to the public. Residents are encouraged to check the Board/Committee Meeting Calendar and call the Superintendent’s Office to confirm dates, times and locations before attending.
King Media, the district’s communication firm, developed the post-election online survey and conducted the focus groups. King has led various communication initiatives in the district since 2018 but was contracted for minimal work on bond-related communication, positioning them well to serve as an unbiased third party.
“Everyone I spoke to loves their community and loves their schools,” says King’s president and founder, Coleen King. “While there are differences of opinion, they all care deeply about the quality of students’ education. Having a highly engaged community, even when there are differences of opinion, is a huge benefit for GHAPS.”
